LET’S GET IT ON – THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF MARVIN GAYE The Mandela, May 5th to May 16th

Australian promoters Simon Myers and Moira Bennett's The Narrative Concerts is a mix of the life stories of the featured artist and the hit songs which brought the artist worldwide success. For the first time in South Africa, The Narrative Concerts will present LET'S GET IT ON – THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF MARVIN GAYE exclusively to Joburg Theatre for a limited season.

The show explores Marvin's humble beginnings, his troubled relationship with his father, his search for meaning and the music that defined a generation. Songs include I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Gaye's stunning spiritual masterwork What's Goin' On and the Grammy Award-winning Sexual Healing.

The voice that formed the soundtrack to countless liaisons in the ‘60s and ‘70s was tragically silenced thirty years ago – and the scale of that tragedy is reinforced through the retelling of his story. From the opening number – Stars and Stripes Marvin-style – to the finale, the show channels ‘the main man' in a tribute that is more music than musical, more lyrics than script.

Room 8, the Australian production company headed by Myers and Bennett, has expressed a wish to cast the leading narratives and personas of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell /Diana Ross in South Africa. Announcements will be made soon regarding these exciting casting opportunities.

The Mandela, May 26th to June 14th

A SPARTACUS of Africa will be performed by international guest artists as well as a cast of over 100 South African dancers to the music of Aram Khachaturian, accompanied by a full orchestra at every performance.

The grand-scale production of Veronica Paeper’s, SPARTACUS will also include international guest artists performing in some of the lead roles.

Joburg Theatre announces the South African première production of the feel-amazing musical comedy SISTER ACT. The theatre has secured the ‘non-replica’ rights to the show for Joburg, which means that it won’t be a carbon copy from London or Broadway. SISTER ACT in Joburg will be a creative collaboration and celebration of South African talent.

SISTER ACT is based on the top-grossing 1992 movie comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg. The musical is written by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane, lyrics by Glenn Slater and music by Oscar and Tony winning composer Alan Menken (Newsies, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors).

When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in one place the cops are sure she won’t be found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but in doing so, blows her cover. Soon, the gang is giving chase only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood.

Filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story, SISTER ACT leaves audiences breathless. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, SISTER ACT is reason to rejoice!

Multi-award-winning South African director and writer Janice Honeyman is on board to direct SISTER ACT.
